We may be a young country, incredibly isolated and talk funny but Australia is really turning up the heat internationally with regards to the modern art and creative scene. The Australian creative industry today is highly competitive, bold, culturally connected and creatively savvy arguably leading the way globally. With the recent introduction of new technologies/social media, globalization and futuristic ideas, Australian artists, now more than ever, are blueprinting the maps for the future of the art industry.
I recently had the exciting opportunity to speak with one of Australia’s very up and coming contemporary artists and designers, Jane Roberts, Creative Director of the fabulous Studio Jane. The artistic powerhouse that uses design thinking to create open, honest and informed outcomes, heavily influenced by contemporary art, was established in 2012 and is currently based in Melbourne, Australia. With a strong presence in the current creative scene and a passion for ‘locally made’, Jane finds herself freelancing for many varying clients displaying her brilliance to transfer and adapt her abilities inventively between them.
“I find that I am influenced and inspired by the risks contemporary artists take. They are at the pulse of new ideas, at the core of setting new trends and I treat communication design in the same way.” Says Jane in our recent interview. Culturally, Jane’s designs and projects reflect her strong work ethic and as a result she continually finds herself pushing her creative limits and ideas making her one of today’s leading young artists.
Describing herself as kooky, passionate and honest, Jane’s differentiation between herself and other local and international designers defines itself as ‘minimal, but with fuss’. Jane’s iconic style includes bold use of colour, but once her designs are stripped back to monochrome, you find clean, simplistic brand marks and layout, founded on ideas. “It allows flexibility of use for my clients. It’s how I build on the overall brand image for a company where the colours really start to come into play, and a brand personality is defined.” Jane’s own personal works find her usage of colour accelerate, strengthening Studio Jane’s presence in Australia’s artistic scene.
Jane finds her inspirations in the imaginative search for new ideas “I am constantly inspired by old and new art, craft, photography, well designed objects, spaces and travel. Travel is so important for regenerating and inspiration. Fun and laughter. Oh, and my cat!” Studio Jane is currently focusing on an exciting brand re-fresh for a fashion photographer, an interior fit-out for a local street wear boutique and a new studio project which includes a series of scarves!
